Designing Kansas City

..
Recently my retail friend, Karen from Rochester, came to visit me on her way to the Atlanta market. We only had two days to hang out but I managed to cram it full by showing her the best of the best in eating and shopping here in Kansas City. I also had the August copy of Kansas City Home Design (KCHD) magazine which has a current story about me and the store.

(click on photos below to enlarge text)
Karen was blown away by this magazine and when I told her K.C. has about four other home design publications she was floored. She continued to be impressed by the size of Kansas City- from Blue Springs (home of American Idol David Cook), to Briarcliff (home of the new Nell Hills), downtown in the bohemian Crossroads (where Curious Sofa began), south to 119th (with our new West Elm and the incredible Apple store), Olathe (home of the soon to be crowned HGTV Next Design Star Jennifer Bertrand) and on to Prairie Village (that's me), Fairway, Brookside with lots of great Stuff; Crestwood Shops, 45th & State Line Antique Row, 39th Street, Westport and then ending our evening at the Classic Cup on our legendary Country Club Plaza. All of us in K.C. take these small neighborhood districts for granted as Karen wasn't the first to tell me she had nothing like this to choose from in her town. What this also shows is that for the small independent retailer, there are many tempting shopping districts to choose from if you want to open a store- and we have many great ones.

I have come to learn that outsiders think if the word 'Kansas' is in the title they think there are miles of flat prairie, cows and cornfields everywhere. Well sure, that's here but not inside the city! We are a widespread booming metropolis and although a little behind the style radar, we managed to finally get a Crate and Barrel, Dean & Deluca, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and so much more.

We are also a town for outstanding antique junkin'. We have great antique malls in every corner of the city and beyond. I haven't even listed here the great small towns less than 40 minutes out of the city limits for great weekend antiquing. (Parkville, Weston, Lexington, Greenwood, Topeka, St. Joe).

The staff told me recently that we had some retail visitors from St. Louis who were not finding anything to resell. Sorry! But you need a good guide to show you the best haunts. It is just like any city- you have to be shown around by someone who shops a lot and knows where everything is. The 'average' person does not know, nor does the hotel concierge or local cab driver!

Two years ago I cringed when I ran into the editorial staff from Country Living magazine at the High Point market. They said they were on their way to scout my home town and I was worried that 'just anyone' was going to show them around K.C.- so I jumped at the chance and when they arrived, I wore them ragged. As I was driving them to their hotel, at 11:30 on the last night of our scout, I said, "Wait! I forgot to show you 39th Street!" I drove past frantically through this neighborhood, talking a mile a minute, explaining this shop and that restaurant and Monica the travel editor looked dazed and confused at Frances Bailey (the features editor) and said dead pan to her, "You got that?" I knew my time was up!

Anyway, many of you write and say you have visited our town before or want to. My goal in the next year is to have a page on our website to show you where to stay, shop, junk, eat and so on. If ever there is a time to visit Curious Sofa it is during Halloween (premiers September 6) or Christmas (Open House November 8)- so plan ahead! Everything may not be 100% up to date in Kansas City, but- I will make it worth your while for a long weekend.

Note: A week ago, in the local newspaper this article ran:
Please email starmag@kcstar.com and tell them of your local favorites and why. (You can start with us if you like!)

Thank You! KC is my home...born at the old Menorah hospital back in 1948, lived on the East Side until 1966 and haven't lived in KC since, but it is always and forever HOME to me! I am even a Royals fan. Here in NC, we have a great life, but you make me want to move back right now!!! I would love to live on Ward Parkway somewhere, love those homes....My folks re-located back almost 3 years ago after living elseware since 1966 and they are so glad to be home too. They live in Raytown. I am coming in October for War Eagle in Arkansas, but hope to hit your shop and the new Nell Hills and maybe some other stops if your "guide" is available on the web site! thanks for the great photos too. KC really is the heart of America!

I've said before, sounds like a road trip to me. Now I've just got to get myself into gear. I'd love to take "The Farmer's Wife" on the road and visit some of my favorite spots - Kelli's farm in Iowa, your shop in Kansas City, Ellsworth, Wisconsin - the Cheese Curd Capital of the World. You know......all the hottest hot spots.

Now Cathy has mentioned War Eagle in Arkansas...what the heck is that? I'm off to Google to find out because we have property in Arkansas. I should know these things. HA.

Keep up the great work. I'll be sure to contact you if I get my road trip organized.

Wonderful idea about the web page maps. It's true, once you get to the destination, where do I go from here???

Back in the day, my daughter went to taxidermy school in KC and everyone told us to stay away from the city, too dangerous, that was just 10 years ago. But the skyline was beautiful, should've explored more.

People really don't have a clue how beautiful the Heartland is. Here in Iowa there are treasures galore, but you need a guide to really open your eyes to the hidden beauty.

debbi,
love your post about our beautiful city! i'm so proud to live in KC and have just promised myself to 'vacation' in my own city now and then. we do have so many great little haunts! i know that you are an extremely busy girl....but you should add 'tour guide deb' to your resume and host a weekend tour of our great city. proceeds could go to one of your favorite charities. i'd love to collaborate/help you with this if you venture in that direction.
fondly,
kathi

I had the pleasure of traveling to Kansas City, MO last weekend to see my daughter. Top on my list was to find Curious Sofa! Now mind you, I missed the July Brimfield Antique Fair to come to Kansas City, so my expectations were pretty high! I simply adored your shop and would miss Brimfield again in a heartbeat! Your staff is amazing, the shop is adorable and I hated to leave. It was a pleasure visiting your shop, buying treasures for myself, treats for friends and some sweet thank you gifts for my daughter (who was appearing with Crossroads Ballet at UMKC ). I look forward to coming to the shop in the coming months now that my daughter has settled in KCMO!
Regards, Donna

Yes, please post a page asap Deb so that I can plan a visit to KC and not miss any of the great places I need to see - including, and foremost, Curious Sofa, of course! I'm in Raleigh, NC but am always ready to head West for some treasure hunting! Off to South of France for the month of Oct. so can't make the Halloween shopping X-travaganza, but perhaps after that.

Thanks for tweaking our inner design hearts - am so anxious to visit your shop.......and love anything grey!!

Hey Deb, it sounds like you have some 'inside info' on the HGTV DesignStar results! (Or is that just you rootin' for your Hometown Girl?)

No inside scoop.
Just rooting for her as I think she has the best on-air personality. (I love her dimples and always smiling face. Something I wish I had!)

Kansas City wasn't on my radar until the first time I saw an article about Curious Sofa in a magazine a couple of years ago. I've been wishing to visit ever since! And, especially after this post. Thanks for doing this publicity post about your city! I look forward to learning more...and hopefully visiting someday. Maybe not as soon as I'd like, but someday in the future!

Every time I see a photo of you, I think how great your hair always looks! Love your style.

KC is my home town. The most gracious folks on the face of the earth. We think we are the best kept secret in the Midwest. Sure we have our problems---but who doesn't. Don't listen to all of the bad news. The good news far out weights it. Come see us. I promise you won't see any cows.
Hugs from all of us in KC!!!!!!!!

Everything you wrote in this post is exactly how I feel about KC. It's me, Tricia, your Arizona friend, shopper. I live in AZ but visit KC every 2-3 months and I always make it to your store. Even if I don't get to buy anything everytime I come, it is always a visual treat to see what you and the gals have come up with. I LOVED your flea market sale, and Fall-Halloween is my favorite time to be in KC. I have found some great places in my explorations of your great city. I look forward to seeing what other places you share with us. Thanks for all your insight, Debbie.

Debbi, KC is my home, but I haven't lived there since 1985. I come home at least 3 times a year and yes, your shop is always on the list to do. I knew of antique areas when I was young, but having a resource like you're planning would be awesome. I never have a lot of time when I come and would love to know exactly where to head.
