A Day Late

.
Returning back to my room tonight during the Atlanta Gift Show, I get an email telling me Country Home is shutting down. This news comes after I spent the month preparing my home for the possibility of finally getting on their pages. This also happened to me with Victoria during their first run in 2002. Rats. On to another publication. Any takers?

In the meantime, a tease of what I was up to.

I'm blown away! You have such a knack for display, and I love that you have combined several styles yet retained an individuality unique to Curious Sofa. Bravo!

I am so sorry that I won't get to relish your home in print, but hopefully you will share more with us here? It is so lovely.

That's awful! It's one of my favorites, too! Why don't they close down all of the silly and stupid magazines, instead of really great ones? Your home and shop would've been perfect on their pages! What's going to survive this?

Surely someone will take you up on your offer soon, your home is amazingly serene and beautiful!! Perhaps a book deal would be better than a magazine....fingers crossed for you. Also as per your last post if your display looked like the local 7/11 we are in big trouble!!! You are style personified and your displays are wonderful, have a great day, kiss noises Linda Lilly Cottage.

In the meantime, your new look is stunning (as usual). Thank you for giving us the peeks into your gorgeous home! I love the pale/neutral color scheme.

I drove down the "main drag" of our little town, and found that Applebees, the BBQ restaurant, Black Eye Peas, the Pasta restaurant, and the only "fancy" place to have a decent meal in town were ALL OUT OF BUSINESS.

I can't believe CH is, too. How sad!

With that said, I am loving your flax colored slip(s) and all the ivory and gray. Your dining room with the built in is my favorite room...

I can't believe my favorite magazine is shutting down! Your home looks beautiful. Another magazine would be crazy not to publish your home. Have fun at the Mart. Will be there on Sunday. Get some great goodies.

I was sad to hear that Cottage Living was no longer as well. Didn't realize Country Home was in the same situation.

Your home looks fabulous. That fireplace/mantel is just...WOW!

I'm very sick about losing Country Home as it was one of my favorites. I found it much more appealing than Country Living.

What the heck? How could this happen to you twice? How about contacting Mary Englebreit's magazine, Home Companion......oh, wait, she's lost her publisher also. Drats.

I love what you've done. Perhaps you could start your own online magazine.

That is sad news about Country Home! I heard that Cottage Living is also going under, my subscription is being replaced by Sunset magazine I believe. Thank God for blogs because we can still see the beautiful things you create! Your rooms are lovely, the new look is very serene and wonderful :-)

OMG, Look at your house! It is gorgeous, new, fresh, sophisticated, casual. Love it, love it, love it.

OK, sad about the magazine, but look at your house!

You always have the best photos.

As for Country Home, that news is not surprising. Their mags have become thinner and thinner, and the content leaner and leaner. I do love Country Living, and I hope they can withstand the economy.

Leigh said...

Serene and inviting. I love it! I hate it will not grace the pages...but when one window closes another opens. Best of Luck. Until then....I use you for my inspiration.

Debi,
As usual, I enjoy your eclectic style. I'm sorry that we won't be able to see it in CH but those of us who read your blog will be blessed inspite of that. I love your sense of composition. Keep on keeping on!

That is a bummer. I got a card in the mail the other day telling me that and that the remainder of the subscription would go to Southern Living. Also an email from Mary's people telling me my $ for Home Companion was being transferred to Martha Stewart. I am a magazine slut as Sally Jean calls us and now I am down two...bummer!! Love the idea of where you were going with the house....

Debe said...

Wait....I just responded to your blog and read wrong!! Country Home!!!! I got a card that Cottage Living (a Southern Living publication) is also suspending publication. I CAN NOT STAND to not have Country Home TOO! This really sucks!!!

I can't believe Country Home is also shutting down. I also loved Cottage Living. That is so depressing!

I love your blog! I'm pretty new to the blog world (I was inspired to start my own a couple of months ago.) so I'm having so much fun finding amazing blogs like yours! I love your style. I also like to decorate with quirky things so I could totally see myself living in your house! (LOL!) Just lovely.

I think the beauty of blogs is what you have done right here. You were able to share with us without having to depend on an outside source. I loved the pictures, and your home is beautiful.

Country Home is one of my favorite magazines, but I just saw that 2 other home magazines have also stopped publication---Cottage Living and Oprah's Home. This is just going to make the blogs about decorating even more important. I'm feeling withdrawal coming on. Love your new look.

Pink Pig said...

Did not hear that about Country Home. I love your style its very relaxing with your touch of elegance and it most inviting. thank you for the great read in inspiration.

What! First Home Companion, now Country Home?...There won't be any good periodicals left. So keep up the shop, it will be the only inspiration I get.
Your home is beautiful.

Oh my gosh ~ I love your home. Your posts are just stunning! I am wondering though, my problem with displaying as I have many places: armoires, shelves, cabinets, long mantle - how do you get everything to look so natural? I always feel like my displays are set up or contrived - not natural looking like my house just "evolved." Any thoughts?
Sarah ~ Can't wait to see more!

Curious Sofa said...

Sarah,
My thoughts are to try and not do what you've always done. Which is hard for me too. For instance, the shot of my home with the coverlet thrown over the chair (that my dog is sitting on). I love how it photographed so natural and comfy but I still look at it and want to get it reupholstered because I think it looks unfinished or sloppy- yet this is the look I am after! So I struggle with it too. I also feel my mantle is too styled. Everything in it's place even though the stuff is old. So all that may come down and one big picture may be added. Carol Bolton is right: undecorated decorating is hard! My first advice is to bring your furniture away from the walls. Try not to have anything 'lined up'. Put that armoire in a corner, move the piano in an unlikely spot. Use a tall table as a coffee table and a dresser as a side table. Try not to design the room around the TV either (which we all do!). Add a strange little chair here and there with a pile of books. Look at some European design magazines (World of Interiors is the best) as they really have an aesthetic that is complied over time and looks haphazard but fabulous.

Be still my heart! I think YOU, your home, your business, your life, could be your own magazine! I'd pre-subscribe in a heartbeat!

Thank you for the beautiful pictures you've shared!

PS I think you and the other "it" girl of design and styling, Ms Elizabeth, ought to do it together!

Sad to hear one of my favorite inspiration publications will be gone. Total bummer, but perhaps a boon for bloggers like yourself that have lovely images of their homes to share. I wish, wish, wish I could decorate my spaces like yours, but my sweetest spousal unit would just fuss endlessly. Bless his heart.

Love what you have done! I miss the "How To" bits that you post from time to time. How did you get the antique French look with the books on the mantel??? Or, perhaps they are old??? blondinx@flash.net

Urban Farmhouse said...

Certainly will miss CH, it's oneof my favorites. That makes 3 losses in the magazine industry now, sigh.Very calm & serene. I'm sure a treat to come home to this. I love the textural mix on your mantle, especially the books/journals/papery things. But Pearl is the pièce de résistance!

Curious Sofa said...

Elizabeth and I have discussed a joint venture but she is much more excited about a book deal than I am. All I can think about is the work involved to make it fabulous!

The French books are really old and purchased from Carol Boltons showroom at High Point. They are one of my favorite things. I have tried to recreate the wrinkled paper edge but it takes a lot of time to wet and dry them over and over again.

Hi Debbie,

I was just rereading my Jan 08 Country Living magazine & had earmarked your Home because it's just beautiful & I LOVE those stacked football benches of yours! I went to the curious sofa site & saw you had a blog so here I am. Your home (again!)is just gorgeous!! I'm really sorry to hear about County Home & it must've hit you hard since you were looking at being published in it... But, you're amazing & will obviously have no trouble getting in somewhere else. I can't wait to see where!

Best of luck to you & I've also starte a blog recently & I'll be back at yours often!!! :)

I cannot even believe what I've heard. I knew about CL, but CH and now ME. What are we suppose to read now. I am the biggest mag ho and I know there are others like me so how are these people going under? Is everyone reading metropolitan home? Not me. Thank God for blogs. Where else can we go for inspiration if we're not into euro/mod.

Delightful blog! I recently discovered your blog and would like to add you to my blog roll as well as have permission to use a photo from your blog in a post showcasing new links. Thank you for your consideration in the matter.

I just read the recent issue of Country Home with a sad heart. What a shame. Your home is lovely, very serene. I'm sure we will be seeing more of your home in a future spread. Your doggie looks as spoiled as mine...so cute perched on that chair!

Angie said...

I can believe Country Home is closing. I stopped picking it up a couple of years ago. I think they lost focus. Country Living keeps true to form, yet seems to stay trendy and fresh.
I have found certain blogs (curious sofa) to be just as satisfying as sitting down with a good magazine, which frankly have become less and less interesting with formats that make it hard to tell what is an article and what is an ad.
Keep up the good work Deb!

I love it. All of it. So sorry to hear about the magazine troubles. I am sure there would be many more magazines would love to feature you. Maybe it's time to send these pretty photos to Victoria and see if they would feature you now. I would love to buy that issue.
