3/50 in June

.
Above, our custom fans were passed out during the Prairie Village Art Show.

Have any of you heard of the 3/50 Project? If not, I want to tell you about the wave sweeping across small businesses in the U.S. What's so cool about this is my friend Cinda Baxter invented it! I met Cinda when I was asked to be on the GHTA retail advisory board in 2007. She had a successful store for many years and is now a buyer, consultant, national speaker and cheerleader for all things retail. The 3/50 Project was created out of necessity to get the message out that if you want your favorite brick and mortar stores to survive, you must support them! We need more than cheers and concern, we need your dollars. What I love about 3/50 is it is not all about me, it is about me and two more of your favorite stores!

Basically the 3/50 Project says this:
1. Pick 3 independently owned businesses you would miss if they disappeared. Stop in. Say hello. Pick up something that makes you smile. Your purchases are what keeps those businesses around.
2. If half of the employed population spent $50 each month in these stores it would create over $42 billion in revenue.
3. For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend this money online, nothing comes home.

If you read this blog I assume you are a fan of Curious Sofa. Many of you shop in the store often and some of you we only see now and then. However often you frequent the store, it is almost impossible to have a conversation these days without a customer asking sincerely, "How are you guys doing?" Now if you make a living in retail you know how to answer these questions with the right amount of political correctness. I am not one for lying or even stretching the truth. I simply do not do it very well. I will always tell someone how we are really doing because it is just habit.

The truth is, we're fine. We're as fine as everyone else is. How's that? I know of no one who is flourishing right now. My staff and I are on board 200% to keep things alive at Curious Sofa for as long as you help. We're still having our events, buying new merchandise every week and the antiques are still coming (and going!) but we cannot survive without you no matter how creative we get- nor can any of your other favorite stores. Please take note of the 3/50 Project and do what you can to keep us all going. We want to continue to be here for you.

So for now, take a look at what we've been up to and believe it or not the Halloween and Christmas goods are already trickling in too!

More ruffled slipcovers just arrived.

One of two original antique Kewpie's I found last week.

The red, white and blue is flying proudly throughout the store.

A pair of vintage concrete eagles just in time for Independence Day.

This antique baby bathtub would be perfect for the household catch-all. I also love the distressed bench/coffee table.

Frosted antique glasses, summer cookbooks and vintage sailboat.

Our collection of salvage is growing too.

I love it when I find a pair of good vintage boots to sell.

This painted vintage buffet just in.

From a weekend road trip, this great collection of cigar boxes.

We've gone global.

Every summer we get the seashells out. I especially love them displayed in this grey cabinet.

Within a week I found this melange of modern items: 60's buffet, industrial light bulbs and vinyl rocker. A nice, clean change for us.

As always, hope to see you!

What a fantastic idea! I was thinking that when I was reading some comments earlier, that loving to come and look at a shop is nice but we need sales to turn things over and keep that momentum going. I really need to try and work out how to incorporate that idea on my side of the world.

I hope that people get the message about the 3/50 project. I had a beautiful shop in OKC but when the economy went down the tubes, people who had always oohed and aahhed just stopped coming. It was like a death in the family when I had to close my doors. It has taken many months to recover from the "emotional" impact alone! Carry on the word!

I love the 3/50 concept. What is the best way to get the word out to our customers? Every day we hear the positive feedback in our shop. "We love your store. We hope you are doing well. We are so glad you are in our neighborhood. etc." Then they leave without making a purchase. How do we let them know that if they love our shop they need to spend their money in our shop?

I couldn't agree more! There are so many wonderful blogs like yours that I visit and would love to shop in-but since I live near Flint, Michigan-it would be a long drive. I would love to know where there are shoppes such as yours are closer to where I live-is there an easy way to find some? Thanks!

i love that you put the 3/50 project out to everyone. We've gotten asked so much this year "how are you doing" too. But we're only doing ok like every year because we're careful and work 7 days a week! I'm going to put by the register the 3/50 project and see what reaction I get. Should be interesting.

i love to support the local small business owners...but of course, don't oppose supporting small on-line business folk too...since that is my only source of income.
best wishes to you!

Shopping local is fun and it makes you feel good (all warm and tingly inside). I haven't stopped by your shop for a while... I'd like to again soon!

Thanks for the great post and very kind complements, Debbie! Coming from someone as savvy as you, they mean a lot.

To everyone wondering how to best use The 3/50 Project to help their businesses, step one is to register, then start handing out the free flyers linked on our Resources page. Even when a customer comes in to visit (without purchasing), it’s easy to say “Hey, let me give you one of these...it’s about something we’re really excited about and involved in, and is something that supports stores like ours and the community.” Every day, I get emails from store owners who tell me about the positive reactions they get from customers who simply didn’t realize what a huge role they play in keeping stores around.

But don’t stop there-—check out the Resources page of our site. Put our members badge on the home page of your store website and we’ll link your listing on the Supporters page back to you as another way of promoting your store.

Pull together with neighboring businesses, put banners in the windows, talk to your local media, Chamber of Commerce, and Main Street Association (the latter two are major supporters of the Project) about how they can help spread the word. The more voices out there, the better....

P.S. to Kansas City: You’re about to get some local media coverage for The 3/50 Project. I’m the guest on The Walt Bodine Show (KCUR 89.3 FM) next week, talking up the importance of supporting local indie business!

Here’s to big things ahead for all the little guys out there,

I think this is the whole truth, by golly. I closed my shop a little over a year ago- and people still tell me they miss it...but while it was eye candy for them, I couldn't exist on the compliments- the electric company just doesn;t want them :) I'll pass the word here and looking for a road trip reason soon!

Love this! Not a shop owner but as my hubs just lost his job we are researching going into business ourselves. I always try to buy local instead of chain stores. Support your neighborhood or see it disappear. I have a friend in her second year as a coffee shop owner. I will definitely get the word to her and other locals here in southwest Ohio.

I did my job last weekend...we flew in from Chicago and did some shopping with the girls at your store. I am happy to help..just wish I could do it every month because I know it would make me very happy.

I'm so glad I found your blog. We are a family run antiques store and have been in business for 20 years. In May, we had only ONE in-store sale. For the entire month! Thank God that we do have a web presence that is pulling us through this recession, but where have all the locals gone? We too painstakingly maintain a large showroom and when no one comes in it really affects our morale (not to mention our bottom-line). But more importantly we've been discussing moving to a warehouse and going online only. I think many people would indeed miss the experience of coming to our store but they just don't realize that means they have to come buy something! I will definitely join the 3/50 project and try to get the word out here in Miami.
Thanks again.

Hello,
I wondered if you ship items? I would be very interested in purchasing some of the items I have seen on your blog as well as in the Romantic Homes issue about your shop.
Please email me if you do.
