Not only is my home featured but the store as well. (This is a first!) The editor Jacqueline deMontravel teased me back in March saying they loved my bedroom shot and it would make a great cover, but- it did not make the cover after all.
What I had hoped to be the cover shot above, my bedroom. The headboard is now for sale in the store. The double lamps were a last minute thought.

I wanted to explain how I use texture instead of color so I sent a lot of closeups of different items in the house.
The giant tumbleweed on the mantle was borrowed from my gardener. That was tough to give back.
Behind the scenes facts: The knobs on my cabinets were hot glued on to save time, the chandelier is hanging by raw wires (and still are) and the greens in the galvanized tub were just for show. I bought this enormous round burlap tablecloth for the store but no one had a table big enough for it so I went and found a table to sell them together.

The following two pages I mocked up for fun before the story came out.

My silver frame collection with old family pics.Back left photo: Mom and dad's wedding pic, John & Hazel 1956. Large oval: Grandma Georgia Peterson 1920. Back right: My other Grandma and Grandpa, John& Mable Dusenberry 1963,
Small sailor pic, my dad off to service 1940's. Couple with car: mom and dad 1955. Front small oval, my big sister Wilma June Garrison 1943.

The shot above was my desperate attempt to make the winter weather appear like Spring. A disaster from the beginning as the wind was so strong that day, it blew the heavy statue down, broke off it's head, and other pots were busted on the floor. It never made it into the mag anyway and I am thrilled! It looked rigged and I never liked it- but cute enough I guess. Thanks to Carol Spinski (Raised in Cotton) for helping during the shoot that day and Gwen and Terri from Mission Road Antique Mall for loaning me some authentic French accessories: (pressed botanicals in the living room, metal canisters on the counter and garden statuary on the porch).
And now the store :
Nothing thrilled me more than to see the tongue-in-cheek heading to the shop article (above). I am not sure even they knew what this title says to a shop owner!
It's official. Pearl has been in enough pictures. She needs to retire from modeling.

I was shocked at myself when I realized I didn't put anything on this table at the end of the bed! We were moving so many things on and off it for the right angle, I forgot.
This great galvanized wall piece I bought in Round Top last March.
The display above was one of my favorites but they cropped it too much in the magazine to get the full effect.

They cropped this picture too much as well and you lost the great pieces in the back.
I have decided to sell the religious stuff all year.
Thanks for looking! More images and lots of text in the magazine. Try to pick one up.

Your photographs are amazing. Thanks for sharing
What timing! I literally just picked this issue up last night and saw the article! Can't wait to read through this today on our trip to the mountains! It all looks beautiful, Deb. Congratulations on the spot!!
Dorothy-
I had forgotten that you were featured in R.H. this month. As I was flippin through the mag, I saw Pearl sitting atop your chair, and I then remembered you were in it this month!! What a beautiful home and store you have. I love the muted color combo. You really have the eye and flair. Love your store also!!
Hugs & Congrads on a wonderful write up!
Jackie
Congratulations! I can't wait to read it!

Debbie,
Your home is gorgeous! I'm not a regular reader of Romantic Homes but I will purchase this issue just to admire your decorating (okay, and maybe borrow some ideas!) Thank you for sharing.
Tina
Stunningly beautiful pictures for Romantic Homes, beautiful job Deb as always your the best.
As a retailer & also speaking for my customers, we would love Romantic Homes to have put ANY of those pictures on the front cover instead of the one they did.
Its like I almost have to grab the customer and say Oh dont pass this one by because of the cover, its got wonderful romantic pictures inside...an I explain your page.
Normally a cover picture will sell a book...thought they would know that by now, and look at the material they had to work with!
Wish Romantic Homes would listen to their buyers.
I have already seen the issue and absolutely loved it. Your store and home were the best articles featured. I wish your porch pic would have made it, so pretty!
Just stunning! Your home is beautiful and I love how you are always changing the pieces around while staying true to the soft neutral palette. I could literally feel my blood pressure go down just looking at the photos-it's that relaxing.
I look forward to seeing the pics of the "sofa".
Laurie
Gorgeous! I love the calm feeling of your dining area. And the grey color of the walls in your guest bedroom. And that beautifully unique headboard. OK, actually, I love it all!
I love the tumbleweed on the mantle. The shots are fabulous... I just couldn't be more thrilled for you!

Oh Brenda I know. I nearly died! Yours is not the first email I have gotten about the bad cover. I am so fearful no one will pick this up. I know nothing about publishing but a pretty cover sells. Still grateful...
I got my copy in the mail last week...........BEAUTIFUL! I had to hold my breath...your home and shop are simply beautiful. Thanks for the mini vacation to your home and shop. Tami E.
Congratulations!!!!!!!! I am so excited for you! LOVELY GORGEOUS photographs...ofcourse, the subject of the photos is just as LOVELY GORGEOUS!
Can't wait to pick up a copy!
Awesome photos! I love love love that headboard! Is it by any chance queen sized? I'm going to be in Spain from August 4-14 - yay! I'll see you in the store when I get back (or maybe I can stop by on Saturday and see the headboard!)
Debbie - Just wanted to let you know this is the first time I have sold out of RH before the next issue arrived. I laid one open at the checkout (the photo of your living room), and as each person saw it they couldn't help to flip a page or two. I explained the two layouts of yours and they are all gone already. Thank goodness my son spilled a little bit of a coke on one last week, wrinkled up the cover so I pulled it back to my office...WHEW! I almost didn't get my own copy.
Lisa
So glad they're selling for you!
Debbie, gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous home! Fabulous photos and layouts. Can't wait to get my copy!
Beautiful pictures of your home and shop. Haven't seen the magazine yet, but I will have to pick up a copy despite the unexciting cover. (I always flip through no matter what the cover, maybe others will too!)
Thanks for the sneak peek! Can't wait to get my issue....beautiful style and photographs....
Take care, Laura
I got my copy in the mail yesterday, and your articles are just exquisite! I have already poured over them several times, and am certain I will go back again. Love you shop and your home. If I ever get close, I will definitely visit. Congratulations!!!
Blessings,
Sandra
Congrats to you Deb! The pics look fabulous!
It's all breathtaking, and I've already worn the edges off my copy of RH. Thanks!
Deb,
So happy you posted this on your blog. . . I haven't seen the magazine on our newsstands yet.
The pictures are gorgeous, and I hope that everyone who sees the article and lives anywhere near Curious Sofa will make a beeline there and treat themselves to something fabulous for their own home.
You are an inspiration! Congrats on a fabulous outcome to a whole of effort and imagination!
When I picked up my copy I never expected such a suprise, I just figured by the cover it may not be one of my favorite issues. I squealed with excitement when I saw the shots of your lovely home and shop, and read it cover to cover. It is indeed one of my favorites to date, as is your blog. Thanks for the inspiration.
Erica
It was double the fun getting to see your additional photos as well as the ones in RH. Couldn't agree more about the cover--what are they thinking?! One other thing--you look beautiful in the photo that accompanied the article!!
Certainly will I get that masine as soon as it finds its way to Sweden. Which will be far later than by you. But never mind, who waits for something good does not wait too long, as we say over here.
Your decorating style is perfect. At least for me it is. Texture is wonderful.
Hugs Eva Agnes
Finally it arrived in California! I've been stalking the guy at the local news stand for the last week.
Wonderful shots and styling Deb, you truely have a gift. I had to smile when I saw the "Distressed" heading, knowing all to well what all us shopkeepers are thinking...
Congrats, Deb, you are so deserving of this!!
Sandi
This looks to be my all time favorite article. I too, have replaced color with texture. Thanks for giving the behind the scenes stuff too. Amazing post, as always.
When we received our shipment at the store, I couldn't wait to see your home. Your kitchen is just the cutest and I want to steal your frig. :)
-Nancy
Absolutely stunning! We're not too far from Kansas City, I really need to make a trip to your fabulous shop! Thanks so much for the virtual tour...I have to pick up that issue of Romantic Homes!!!!! Love it!
Hugs and Happy day!
Christina :)
Hi: I just got the magazine and to my delight, I saw the spread on the lady who started me blogging. I was so proud! No one deserves it more. I told my husband this is a lady I blog with. I can not tell you how delighted I am for you. Your home and your store are beautiful! Congrats!
CAn't wait to get my mag. All of the pics look amazing but how could they not with it featuring your spaces with you styling....k
Debbie,
Both features were absolutely wonderful! xo Lidy
Deb, I was at the store a couple of weeks ago looking at magizines and started telling a woman there about your upcoming article and she has heard of your store, there is a store across the street from my store called All About Home and I mentioned your name last week and again the owner told me she reads your blog all the time. This is a small town in Missouri. I thought you might like to know this. I can't wait to read the article.
Have a nice day,
Angie

The article on your home and shop was the best part of this issue of RH. I marked the page with your beautiful bedroom because I fell in love with your wallpaper. I might just have to try if for myself. I wish I had a thimbleful of your style sense. thank you for sharing!
I have the magazine and your house and shop are spectacular! I LOVE your home - it is SO beautiful. I remember when you were in Country Living too. You are so talented! I love to study the pictures of your home over and over. And that kitchen! How gorgeous!!! Sincerely, Your biggest fan, Ann
Wow, your home and shop are so beautiful, congrats on the feature!
soooo I've been on vacation for two weeks and I get home and start flipping through my magazines and I see this little white fluffy dog. and I think...i know that dog! and I go back and start at the beginning of the article and realize I DO know that dog! I've seen Pearl on your blog so many times, she popped out of the magazine at me! Lovely article and Pearl is quite the ambassador and celebrity.
I received my magazine in the mail last week and immediately sat and looked at every photo and read every word. I admire your style. Please keep inspiring us!
It just so happened I bought the magazine for the first time and really didn't read the front...while flipping through the pages I noticed the pics of your house...not knowing it was yours but immediately thinking I had seen it somewhere before :) When you were featured in Kansas City Spaces I believe. You are on a roll, congratulations.
Janet
I was so thrilled to see not only your lovely home, but your shop as well in RM! I love your style and am a faithful reader of your blog. Thank you for the extra photos from the shoot - I can't get enough!
Hey Deb! Well I loved your home before, and would have never thought you could improve on it but you proved me wrong! I love it--very serene and soothing. It's perfect! The shop is awesome as always too. Off to find a copy of RH. See you at Marburger??
Hugs,
Shelley
Thank you everyone for your faithfulness and wonderful comments on the magazine. I am so fortunate to get this press for the store. It is more needed now than ever.
YES! I do hope to see friends at Marburger. Save me something good.
Congrats Deb! I can't wait to get this issue, I absolutely love your style. I love the new banner as well and the pic of you in the mag is just beautiful. Can I be you when I grow up? Oh wait,,I'm already old. hahaha
Congrats! Everything looks beautiful, as always.
Hi,
Your store looks amazing and quite an inspiration. I have a shop in the Seattle area and it looks like we carry alot of the same products. Always inspiring to see other shops! I carry the Romantic Homes magazine in the shop, so I saw your pictures already, they are amazing. Love your house! Hopefully it brings you great business.

I picked up a copy over the weekend and I must say I was so impressed, the photography was awesome and your shop and the items you carry are just stunning! This is how I found your shop from this article.
Cindy
Oh man, I could hardly WAIT to dig into the article (I knew it was coming...) and sure enough, it was just heaven!!! Loved everything.
Congratulations on the fantastic article. All the photos are stunning. Very well-deserved. Hope it brings in some business.
Olga
Congratulations Deb! The September issue of Romantic Home was a huge surprise! Not a clue from the cover... I was thrilled to open the magazine and discover not one, but two fabulous articles about Curious Sofa... you must be tickled to death! The pictures were mesmerizing. And Pearl...oh how cute! (she is too young to retire...perhaps a few well placed cameo shots in the future?)
I was in Kansas City a few weeks back visiting my daughter. When in KCMO, Curious Sofa is always on my to do list. I had the opportunity to briefly stop by the shop over my recent stay. Per usual, your shop was gorgeous, inspirational, smart, smashing and the highlight of my trip. My only regret is that I did not have more time to shop. We need a Curious Sofa in the Boston area. Perhaps you might consider a Boston or New York City location?
Thank you for being Curious Sofa!

Hi Deb! I just found your GORGEOUS shop last month when we were in KC to visit family - and now I've found you yet again in my favorite magazine! Love everything about your style and grace ~ can't wait to come back and visit your shop on our next visit. Congrat's on the article ~ xo Joy
i just went to my local bookstore this afternoon and saw the spread in the magazine...it was brilliant! i've been a blog-lurker for several years, a constant fan and it was really fun to see your style spilling from the pages of RH today!
continued success and joy to you!
The articles on your home and Shop in RH are just fabulous! The photos are stunning! Congratulations! Angie
Love the texture vs. color. Great idea. This was such a great article. You know your store is my favorite of all time! COngrats!

I heard you were in it. I can't wait to get it.
Just beautiful.

It so awesome to see women who "get it" and girlfriend, boy howdy..you totally do.
I am lucky to be a ways away enough to admire from afar, as if I did live closer, I would be hopelessly broke from spending my paycheck with you. Its a joy to see those photos, and your gorgeous mug, too.
I am going out to search for the mag, my little town is hopelessly without a good outlet, probably on line.
I am also loving the shop owner series by Jay. Its an eye opening to all of us girls in the biz, who love the artistry of it...and not the books.
take care!--and keep up the most excellent work, girl!
Lisa
I got this magazine at Sister's Grden a couple weeks ago and was thrilled to see your store and house featured. Great use of old and new for a ocmfortable look...I also love the religious theme stuffed and am excited you have decided to sell it year round!
ohhhhh, a swedish girl love love love your blog!
regards from agneta
I have my copy and have loved reading every bit about you and the store! So proud for you!!!
Congrats on the lovely duo of articles, Deb. Staged with finesse, well shot, and terrific, insightful articles {my favorite, of course, was the Shopkeeping feature}. The paragraph on page 73 that starts with your quote, "I try to hunt..." is the best explanation I've ever heard for keeping a balance in one's store between indie artists' work and mass produced items. Yes!!! I also enjoyed your tips for prospective shop owners in the "Insider Trading" sidebar. I think a trip to Curious Sofa would just make my year.
By the way, I have to say that I agree with other commenters who expressed some concern over the lack of cover appeal. I'm SURE that our opinions won't be the only ones RH hears on this topic.
I can look at these pictures all day! Just love, love, love the one with the shelves and gorgeous old ironstone!!!!!! Can't wait to get my mitts on this!!!!
I picked up this issue last week and loved it. I have pulled some of the pictures out and put them on my inspiration board. I adore your style, and if I lived near you I would definitely be poorer than I am now!! LOL! Congrats on being in the magazine!

Hi Deb,
Great photo of you, I absolutely loved your house, serene and calm, you have a great rhythm in the flow of your items, always beautiful... happy that you got in the magazine also.
I bought an awesome mid-century easel and lucked out and found a large scale one full of oil paints, was ecstatic on those finds, it's been a few yrs. since I wrote to you and I know you have droves of people that you deal with, anyway, your shop is still the best, always in the now and not full of knick knacks and lacey, crafty, stuff that make me cringe!!
Best Regards
I must say that you are the only reason I purchased this issue - and I feel any one of your photos would have done justice to the front cover - I did not like what they put on there! I will treasure my copy and savor each page that you are featured on! Congratulations, you are very well deserving of this, I have long wanted to see your gorgeous Shop, and your home is absolutely beautiful! xo Sherri @ PRP
It looks wonderful - I'm anxious to go buy the issue...
YEAH! I got my issue today and your articles are wonderful. The tidbit about hot glueing the knobs on really makes me laugh :) Erin
WOW! Congrats...I will tell you that even before I saw your post, I picked up this wonderful magazine and enjoyed your article on a plane!! It is beautiful, inspiring and just so wonderful! The pics, your home and store...YOU ARE AMAZING! Now, if I just lived closer to come visit! Have a great day!
Jena
stunning~ the wishbone collection is unique, that caught my eye... among all the other beautiful photos!

Dear Deb,
We absolutely love your Romantic Homes' spread!! The editor definitely misstepped when they did not feature one of your photographs on the cover! You have created rooms with such an overwhelming sense of peace and relaxation. Your rooms are evocative of the calm you feel at the seaside on a cloudy day...
Are you the stunning child in the photo on the silver tray?? Just curious!
The picture of the blonde girl on my silver tray is my oldest sister Wilma. Circa 1945!
I think RH made the wrong call on the cover--your bedroom is absolutely fine!! Who is the woman in the middle photo of your silver-framed photos? Stunning woman, stunning frame! I luxuriated in this post . . . from a fan in Bellingham, Washington.
Debi a.k.a. Ormolulu.com
The larger middle frame is my Grandmother. Wasn't she stunning? (and the hair!)
Deb, The RH article turned out amazing! LOVE, LOVE the Living Room photo with the lights. I had tons of fun working with you (as I always do)even when we were trying to dodge flying concrete garden statues because of the wind:)))
Hugs,
C
LOVE your blog and your home is gorgeous!!!
Michelle
I bought the September Romantic Homes issue almost a week ago. I loved that they featured your home as well as your store. I had to look twice to make sure I wasn't imagining. So glad they did, because I can never get enough of your style. I, too, love patina when I buy silver or other metal pieces. Thank you for the inspiration and ideas of how to display and use objects in unusual ways! I live in Arizona, but am planning to visit your shop next summer, I just know it will be worth the trip!
I have this magazine on the sofa beside me as I type! Love this article and the photos!! I hope you'll be flattered when I tell you I am doing the double lamps on a silver tray bedside, as I love your photo so much! What a great effect, thanks for the inspiration, and CoNgRaTs!!
Oh how beautiful! Thanks for sharing the additional photos - sigh!!
Dearest Debbie,
I just picked up the RH issue, and like some other bloggers on this subject, I too, wish they would have placed a photo of your home or shop on the cover. Yikes! Good thing I leafed through the issue first or I probably would have passed it by. As soon as I saw the article I stopped leafing, bought the magazine and came home to savor every photo and word.
Your home and shop are just breathtaking. I have saved most of the articles on you, from Victoria (glad it's back!!) to Country Living to Romantic Homes, plus the Vintage Christmas book. You are truly a wonderful inspiration to me and countless others, I imagine, to follow our dreams and what we can accomplish with out God-given gifts.
God's Blessings To You Always,
Gail & Roan (my 10 month old German Shepherd, my new joy and love!)
I got it!!! Wonderful lay out! I love all the pictures and Pearl is just too precious. Congratulations on a fabulous story. I hope to get there soon to visit your store...It reminds me of my favorites in Fredricksburg, Tx!!
xxx kim
So beautiful...thank you for the inspiration! I haunt your blog regularly...you have an amazing way of bringing things together. I hope you mention the kind of paint used to paint your lovely home in!!!
love & magick!
xo Lavona
I am embarrassed to say I am not very picky about my paint. I sometimes buy cheap brands (Wal-Mart) and sometimes better (Behr). It's all about the color you choose. When doing a photo shoot I am usually rushing to meet a deadline so I make quick color decisions standing at the hardware store. My interior is just a mix of neutrals (beige to grey). The only color I chose carefully was the spare bedroom in Dorian Grey from Sherwin Williams.
your shoot was beautiful...naturally!!! loved the bedrooom.... we sell the mag and i have it open to your pics....
ann
I was looking at these pictures, yet again. This time I noticed the beautiful blue ceiling in your dining room with that INCREDIBLE crown molding! So GREAT! SERIOUSLY!
I thought I had that issue but couldn't find it. So I sent my daughter to pick one up for me at the store... and she brought home the October issue which had just been put on the shelves. I wanted to see it so badly.... but I'll have to settle for the photos on your blog... which are gorgeous!
Love the article in RH ,I think this was their best issue in awhile! Looking forward to stopping by your shop if I ever get that way. Thanks for the eye candy & advice {as a new shopkeeper
I appreciate it :)}
