We Say Merry Christmas

My last article for the Kansas City Star.

I’m confused. When did it become so wrong to say, “Merry Christmas”? Why has the fear of offending someone become foremost in our standard holiday greeting? I, for one, am more determined than ever to say “Merry Christmas” over “Happy Holidays” to a friend, stranger or customer in my store.

Being a retailer during the Christmas season is a daunting task. Not only do you have to put your personal faith in check (because, heaven forbid, you might offend a paying customers by mentioning the “Christ” word), but when you set off to plan your fourth quarter business, the variety of items to purchase makes you second guess the reason for the season.

When I opened my store in 2000, I remember taking a stand that I would never sell anything Santa Claus. Now, how stupid was that as a retailer? Although I was trying to make a loud and clear statement about my faith, it was also just bad business to not have a Santa or two for sale in the store. Little did I know that as I went to market to buy inventory, my desire to showcase Mary and Joseph over jolly St. Nick was shot down by aisles, floors and showrooms of the latter. When did we forget how we received this holiday in the first place? I blame manufacturers nowadays for caving to the easier and more politically correct Christmas icon, but are they only doing what we have demanded? I believe they are missing the mark.

Every year, I buy Christmas merchandise and design my store around many themes for the season. When I started to discover lovely, antique reproduction santos depicting religious Madonnas, angels and saints, I knew it was time to stop hiding the reason for the season. For four years now, the staff and I proudly design, display and sell from a large religious assortment of crosses, nativities and Christ-centered items. And guess what? They sell. They sell so well that many customers make a point to thank us for acknowledging the Christ in Christmas. It seems decorating with the baby Jesus (and Mary and Joseph and the others from that most famous birth) was what my customers wanted. They, too, were tired of hiding behind their beliefs and being bombarded with the jolly red suit.

Besides the typical red and green, using the regal colors of royalty is perfect for Christmas decorating. Fresh evergreens combined with dark coppers, burgundy and deep purples can support a design around religious decor. I personally prefer an all white Christmas with the Holy Family center stage. The ethereal look of sparkling lights or candles, mercury ornaments and objects, glistening deer or stars all mix perfectly with the Holy Family. Nativities or religious icons come in all sizes now, so larger figures can be arranged on your mantel while smaller figurines can be hung from a tree or tied to a small wrapped package. Larger nativities look perfect placed inside an unused fireplace. Scatter some straw and arrange the items accordingly, creating your own creche. Medium crosses would also be lovely tied to the inside of your front door wreath.

On the other hand, finding the childlike joy in Christmas certainly takes us back to our younger days — waking at the crack of dawn, ripping open presents under a glistening tree — and makes the red and white Santa fit in perfectly. But let us also remember the quiet calm of Christmas Eve, when we walk into our local church, hear the wonderful Christmas hymns and the message of how this holiday came to be. What a perfect gift. Hallelujah, indeed.

100% AGREED! We just had the very same conversation at the shop where I work PT and sell my artwork. It's a country antiques store and the discussion was should we or not, say 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Holidays'? We all decided that it's MERRY CHRISTMAS. All of our customers are probably not going to notice, but we'll feel better not having to 'hide' our religion. I'm so tired of hearing about taking the religious sentiments out of everything ...isn't that why we live here? To be able to say 'one nation under God'and pray where/if we wish. I believe that those who "don't" are infringing on the rights of those who "do". 'Nuff said! :-)
MERRY CHRISTMAS Debbie!
(Doesn't that sound good?)

Thanks Debbie for a great post. I read your blog all the time,to check out your great store and ideas. But this one sure sparks a response. Why can't we all respect each others religious beliefs and just move on. I'm sick to death of "poliical correctness". I'm saying Merry Chirstmas too!

Keep up the great work on everything!

I'm a "Merry Christmas" shopkeeper too...and I loved your presentation of Christ in your shop, that's the only type of Christmas pictures I will buy for my home. I love the nativity scenes, and like you said the rich colors, browns and golds.
Amen to your story! Brenda at Just a bed of Roses in Utah

I will always say Merry Christmas. It's ingrained into my psyche. I never realized what a struggle you shop keepers have. Probably it evens out in the long run. The people that are offended don't come but there are others that seek you out. I know I wish I lived near enough to buy some religious Christmas items from your shop!

God Bless!

Love your shop, Debbie, wish I lived closer to KC! I had a shop and I had the same problem. And I told everyone Merry Christmas, and if they said "I don't celebrate Christmas" I would say "well then have a wonderful holiday season". You've obviously been so successful because you are true to yourself - keep up the fantastic work!

Perfectly said, Debbie. Isn't it true that customer's want to celebrate Christmas as it was intended. I'm going to forward this post to my boss. We are in retail too and she proudly has The Message playing in our store along with many prayer journals, books with scripture, along with all the pretty things. I wish I was coming home for Christmas so I could come visit. I hope your 4th Quarter is fabulous!

Thank you so much for the great article in the Star today. It is certainly refreshing to know that there are still some retailers that still try to be true to themselves and share that w/ others. How will the rest of the world know the real meaning of Christmas if we don't share it! I'll be in your shop during this season! Carolyn

Hi Debbie,
I just found your blog this afternoon and wanted to say that I totally agree with you! I'm sick of living in this great country and 'told' to be politically correct, what to say, etc. My belief is in Christ and I will say "Merry Christmas!" I do respect other's choices so I would love for them to respect mine. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

I say Amen,Amen! Jesus IS the reason for the season, and I'm so glad that you make it the focus of your decorating. I'd love to find a store in Portland OR that would be so bold as to sell something other than gawdy "Holiday tree" ornaments and other secular themed merchandise. God will bless you as you put Him first in everything you do!

Along with so many, many other beliefs and cultures and this is why we live here in the land of thr free and the home of the brave. We allow for other religions and such, so let us in our Country feel good about saying MERRY CHRISTMAS and God Bless Everyone.

Thanks Deb for that post. I totally agree. We should not be made to feel like we can't say Merry Christmas. It is our right to say that just as others have their right to not say it. I will always say Merry Christmas and not let anyone stop me.
Have a blessed Christmas!

THANK YOU for standing up for what you believe. If the word "Christ"mas offends anyone, then they should shop elsewhere.
It's YOUR store, and you should be able to express yourself, as you wish, in your own place!

Our ancestors came to this country for religious freedom....NOT freedom *from* religion...lol!
Seems as if some forget that.

In a world thats becoming more and more PC, I hate that too. It shouldnt be wrong to say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. It shouldnt be wrong to bring up Jesus either. Im seeing alot of that all over tho and it makes me sad.

I know there are folks who do not believe in any of this and perhaps this time of yr for them is overwhelming and annoying. (Like those snoring santas yrs ago, I would go in stores and shut them off!) but everyone is entitled to do what they want. So say what you want to say and let the others be annoyed. We cannot please everyone and for me theres only one I really need to please, God.

Hugs.

Great post. I noticed last year, as a retailer, when I wished people a Merry Christmas, they were very appreciative. I guess we are so busy not stepping on any toes, we don't express our own thoughts to strangers.

THANK YOU!! I was so happy to read your post. I find it greedily (is that a word?)contradictory for stores, restaurants, etc to refuse to say Merry Christmas...yet at the same time they work hard to benefit financially from the Birthday we are celebrating. I am so very tired and disheartened that religion and patriotism is deemed intolerable by an increasing population. Merry Christmas and God Bless America!!!!

Lovely, Thank you.

This was a very poignant post. I agree with everything you say but I do love Father Christmas! We haven't reached that stage of political correctness here yet- most people will gladly wish others a Merry or happy Christmas and Christmas trees are still ever-present in public places and spaces. I really hope it stays that way too.
I love your blog and if I ever get over your way I will make my first stop your beautiful store!
Best wishes, Natasha.

I commend you on doing the 'difficult' thing by allowing Christ into your store. I find it strange that we Christians are made to keep quiet about our faith, (and sometimes even feel guilty about it), yet it's perfectly fine for a person of any other religion or faith to proclaim theirs openly. I say enough is enough. I will always say Merry Christmas, and if the other person chooses to respond according to their faith, or not at all, that's fine with me.

A great article!

I think you've hit everything right on the mark. When we have to take "Christ" out of Christmas, it's not Christmas anymore. They've pretty much taken it out of our schools, I don't want them taken it out of the holiday it's named after. Bravo for you standing to the politically correct.

I am biting my tongue and keeping my fingers from typing too fast....you touched a topic that has been on a frazzled nerve of mine for years. You are so articulate and kind with your words....much kinder than I feel at the moment on the topic. Thank you for taking time to express so wonderfully (and gracefully) the emotions I have regarding such a simple gesture of goodwill gone wrong in a country where "political correctness" is anything but divine.

There! I feel a little better now! :-)

Peace. Joy. Love.

That pretty much sums up the season. How offensive is that?

Merry Christmas.....a VERY Merry Christmas!

Of course we Brits usually say "Happy Christmas" which is still in keeping with the religious (true) meaning of Christmas. I will keep on saying it........even my Jewish friends even say it back with a grin - I love that!!!

Thanks for this wonderful article - you are a brave woman and please know we stand behind you on this. So-called 'political correctness' is destroying this country and people are growing tired of it.

Bring on Christmas in all its beauty, especially the religious statuary, crosses etc. Let it be dressed in warm red and green or cool silver and white. Our children need to know what this season is truly about, and of course we'll allow a few santas too........for the little ones!!!!

The shop looks amazing, as always Deb. I'm still trying to visit there, and will, some day!!

"HAPPY CHRISTMAS" to you and the staff.

God Bless You, Debbie!! So great to see shopkeepers living by their faith and not afraid to say it! I am really tired of the so-called "politically correct" ness that is being forced upon us. This is America, a country founded on Christian beliefs - all our the major statutory holidays are related to Christianity - Good Friday, Easter, Thanksgiving and of course, Christmas Day. It's not called "Holidaymas" - it's called "Christmas" for a reason - Jesus!! He is the reason for the season and for everything else we have!! There are more of us than you can imagine, it's the silent majority that is no longer going to be silent. Thank you for standing up for your beliefs and posting blogs like this one - it is appreciated more than you know. God Bless and have a Very Mery Christmas!!
