Falling Star

Is it just me or is this seasons HGTV Design Star the worst thing to come along in the design world since plastic slipcovers? What is going on here?!! Last night's show just about did me in so I had to post something about it. If you are like me you cannot help but watch and underneath the internal screams ask yourself, "what would I have done?"

Tonight's challenge was to design an apartment in a new Trump Plaza complex. Anyone within arms reach of a paint chip should already know this means your design better be good, it better be glam and it better be finished! Now when I say finished I do not mean the paint better be dry I mean pulled together. Rugs, window treatments, art, furniture, objects, style... that's what design is! It seems no one told this bunch.

To add the proverbial prime-time twist to this task they give each contestant their inspiration for the makeover: a New York souvenir or landmark to design their room around. Already I smell disaster because past episodes have shown this team has no imagination. Here is an example of past projects:

The white box challenge. I think I would have walked off the show
if I had been a judge after seeing this.

A patio challenge: One hot mess is all I can say.

Designing a room from a floral bouquet: How many colors
of blue can one room have?

Now for this weeks episode:
The Inspiration: The New York Skyline

How they expressed it:
WHY DIDN'T THEY DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?

The Inspiration: Times Square

How they expressed it: (no, I am not kidding!)

WHY DIDN'T THEY DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?
A large Times Square mural and glistening globe lights to remember
dropping the ball on New Years Eve.

Inspiration: The New York Taxi Cab
How they expressed it:

(what is not shown: a tiny cab toy under glass!)

WHY DIDN'T THEY DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?I love seeing this style of black and white floor with a more modern twist
rather than using the typical check.

The touch of turquoise was just right to break up the black and yellow palette.

Inspiration: The Statue of Liberty
Here is what they did:
Yes, this is the after picture!

WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THIS?
Can you imagine using this image and building the room around it
using patina colors like Liberty herself? Oh, the possibilities!

While researching this post I see I am not alone in my angst over this show. The HGTV website, chat rooms and blog have been inundated with negative comments about this series. Each week the judges try to find something positive to say to the contestants about their hideous designs when I am screaming from the couch, "There is nothing good to say!" Where is the Simon Cowell judge to tell these clowns they don't have a clue?! I was excited to see Mark Burnett had taken over the production but I am not sure he is in charge of the tasks, the casting or the judges. All I know is Donald Trump Jr. finally told the contestants what they should have heard from day one, "I am tearing out what you did as we speak." Now that's good TV!

I am so glad someone said something about this mess! I was just dying over last nights show and thinking how do you call yourselves "Designers"
Yet, I sat there and watched it to, yelling at the television screen, are you kidding me. LOL
I could only imagine what the real Don would have said...

I concur. I lost interst in this show after the first couple seasons. Too much drama and self-aggrandizement for my taste.

I am so with you on this!
Design Star has been one of my favorite shows, but this season is a disaster! The challenges have been repetitive (up until last night), the contestants boring and the judges are bitter!
I cannot help but watch, too, so I really hope they can improve it!

Gyan said...

I couldn't agree more. It sucks this season - I don't see any 'star power' in any of the contestants. However, after looking at the pictures you posted, I think you ought to consider a bid for the show next season - seriously. You have a definite style, and I think your work would put others to shame.

Deb, I couldn't agree with you more. If one of these morons can get their own show then we should have our own network. I quit watching after the second show due to lack of any talent whatsoever, but watched last night as there was nothing else on. I see talent is still MIA.

Hugs,

Shelley

you're spot on. This year's crew is the worst EVER. :( I've always enjoyed the premise of this show but the reality of it this year is almost enough to make me abandon it in favor of something that's at least remotely inspiring...

I hardly have hair left after the show! Thank you for venting in such a better way than my mumbling, grumbling, griping and frustrated comments. Sweet Baboo's response to my flared nostrils? "Why do you even watch that show?" Well, I don't know why, I just DO. And I'm mad at myself today!!!!!

Thanks

I have quit watching it cause it is so awful... I had more talent come in fresh from high school at the design level.... The show is a downer... no talent.... because you say you are a designer you think you are allowed to do this terrible work and everyone will drop over it... I don't think so.....

Jill@Patinka's said...

OMG! Did you watch the Firehouse episode? I was thinking to myself...what are they thinking?...where is the WOW??!!!I really don't see any talented designers HERE!!!

Valerie said...

Hot mess, for reals. What kills me is that there is a blog I read written by a gal that lives less than a mile away from me. She bleeds talent. She was a finalist to be on the show and didn't make the final cut. It kills me to watch the other clowns with zero talent on there and know that she could have been on there making great rooms and great TV. How in the world did they pick these people?

Dawn said...

I'm with you.
HORRID!
That bathroom!?!?!?!?!
Spa feel?????????

It is just embarrassing.

My hubs also asked why I bother to watch.
Rather like a nosy onlooker, I guess.

Debbie Dusenberry said...

Now that the subject has come up, my friend Elizabeth was rejected too, 2 seasons ago! I concluded the producers are more interested in casting a motley crew than real talent. We always seem to get the token gay boys, the bimbo, the ethic kid, the free spirit, etc. Can you imagine if this show would have the new Ralph Lauren, Martha Stewart, Nate Burkus, Thomas O'Brien, etc... all on one show!?! Why they dumb down the audience is beyond me.

I haven't even watched this season. Those rooms looked horrible. I am not very talented when it comes to design (which is why I look to websites such as your's for inspiration), but I know terrible when I see it!

Like all reality shows and contest shows, they aren't going for talent, they're going for drama.

Garden Antqs Vintage said...

Deb, I think you should be one of the judges or on their design team, now that would be a show worth watching. I haven't watched this show in some time but was flipping through last night and caught a glimpse of it, but just kept going...

Bev Norris said...

It was a mess and every week it is a mess. Worst show on tv! Glad i am not alone! Need more Sarahs House. It is the best! Design Stars -- I don't think so. No winners in this season!

Katherine said...

Who's smoking crack...the so called "designers" or the so called "judges"?

Angie said...

Elizabeth was rejected?!?! There is so much potential for a great show. They must live in a bubble.

Now if someone would do a female version of American Pickers, THAT would be a great show!

Whimsey Creations said...

I look forward to this show everytime and this year it's just horrible. Usually there are at least a few good designers. This year I don't know. Weren't those dropcloth curtains with the strips of plastic tax bag just the worst??? Yikes, and I stay up past my bedtime to watch!

Cheryl said...

Well said, Debbie. I was wondering if I was the only one who thought their designs are AWFUL! I don't know what they are thinking, but I do hope that next season, they will have designers that CAN DESIGN! I'm so done with the show this season!

OMG...Deb you are ssssoooo right I watched with a pillow over my eyes...plus it also helped stiffel my screams! I just keep saying over and over this is got to be a joke! Please someone tell me I'm being "Punked"!

I don't know who I'm more embrassed for the "designers"???? or the network?????

leslie janson said...

i couldn't watch that episode because i saw the previous one where they "designed" nyc firehouse rooms where firemen relax. absolutely horrible - really an insult to our firefighters. Debbie I'm not kidding. You are the woman for this show! You could win with both hands tied behind your back! C'mon Debbie - we need you and your talent on TV - please? Leslie

Lori Lucas said...

I totally agree. I could not even believe anyone "won" last night. I would have "You're fired" the entire group and called the show what it is---HORRIBLE!! That is the only way they could have saved face!

I was saying the same things you were, "Oh how cool. I could come up with great ideas using NY memento's".

Thanks for letting us all rant! Lori

I think the consensus this year is that it literally STINKS!!!!!! The only positive thing to come out of this years show is that they finally got rid of Nina!!!!! It has been a monumental disappoint! Glad that you brought it up. The Facebook page echos everyone's similar opinion!
Thanks for your input!

I agree it was bad. However, the inspiration idea was screwed up also - they HAD to use what was given to them for the inspiration, even the bags. UGH!!!!
I have gotten to the point I tape it, hear the challange, run to the end to see the design and then think like you - these are PROFESSIONALS?

Faith said...

Amen! Every week I scream, "WHERE DID THEY FIND THESE PEOPLE???" (I couldn't stand Nina and was relieved when she was booted off...) I'd like to know what the criteria was for getting on this show? I'd like to see you on the show - someone who obviously KNOWS design and style and has a creative imagination. By the way - I loved your ideas for the TAXI!

Kim said...

I think the whole reality "star" show concept has become tired. I'm tired after I watch these things and my first thought when I saw the judges this season was of when Genevieve put moss on the walls on Trading Spaces! Vern and Candace are good designers...I like Genevieve but I'm not impressed by what she does, quite frankly and I wonder where all their haughty attitudes are coming from..Those contestants must have some sort of talent somewhere but it's almost like they are afraid of something and I think they are afraid of each other..they can't work together..Vern has to be the referee and I really don't see anyone left on the show that would make a good candidate for their own tv show! I agree...lets have more of Sarah's House! And while I'm at it....let's vote for less House Hunters!!! I want to see decorating...I want new fresh ideas that we can actually use and be inspired by! I love you Deb..You always say out loud what the rest of us are thinking!... I'll shut up now!

Lou Cinda @ Tattered Hydrangeas said...

I hate it this season too! WHERE IS CLIVE??? He added much needed humor and light heartedness! This is not brain surgery, it is design! I wish the judges would just lighten up already!!! They are so serious all the time! Makes me NUTS!! I have watched Genevieve since Trading Spaces and she was SO silly...she has evolved, grown, matured and developed her sense of design. Did she forget from whence she came? Me thinks so! And VERN! LIGHTEN UP MAN!!

I WAS SO GLAD when Nina got axed! She thought she was ALL THAT! NOT!
Whew! I feel better...

I agree completely. I haven't seen anything from anyone that would make me want to watch a show they were hosting. And, with only the worst designers shooting hosting spots, what if the remaining contestants are terrible on camera? How is it possible that the rooms this group has done are so sad? I'm not a big fan of the judges' personalities this year either.

amen, sister.

that's almost all i can say.

the people that get on this show are whack-jobs.
clearly, a chimpanzee could've done a better work.

the whole HGTV network has gone down hill, minus a select small group of wonderful shows that are merely holding the network's original platform together by a thread, such as sarah's house, dear genevieve, divine design, and a few others.

blah. that is all.

Jillayne said...

Well, all I have to say is sit down and think about it - these shows are staged and choreographed from the get-go. There is no way on earth the producers were blind-sided. If it's bad, it's bad on purpose so people will tune in again to see the contestants upbraided yet again. I despise reality shows because they are not even remotely real; they're staged better than any room in any BHG magazine. Someone doing a great job will not bring viewers back - only high drama will.

JolieAnne said...

Your feelings about the show are
exactly right! I cannot believe we are subject to this sort of torture-they are not designers! I feel like most of the blogs I visit are better at design than
the ones that are still on the show. I am not fond of anything on hgtv this summer except for Sarah's House!

Anonymous said...

Thank you for mentioning this ....because I thought maybe I was the only one. With all the crazy things going on in the world...I got worked up over a reality show!! :) I have never hollered out loud
when in a room all by myself at a TV program before last night!!! :)
Are you kidding me!! My husband came running....what is wrong. I can not believe this show and the time and money being spent on it. Unbelievable!
I even turned down the sound during their on camera time....I was so embarrassed for them. What has happened to Vern...sweet Vern ....he has even lost it!! And what was up with all three judges dressed in blue..Strange. But as we can all see it has us talking about Design Star and probably tuning in again next week just to see if they can all redeem themselves. Same time next week!!!

Angela said...

I've never seen Vern Yip so angry! He's ususally the nicest guy ever and I can tell he's lost all patience with this crew. That blue bathroom was hideous!
I actually love your b/w & yellow ideas - maybe you should be on the show? You'd bring a lot of great design for sure :)

I only saw the end and it was HORRIBLE! This is the cream of the crop?????

Also, where is Kim Myles, Antonio and Jennifer (the blond that won a few years ago)? Other than David Bromstead, no one else has their own show.

They need to take it off the air.

You are so right, I just said the other day to my sister's that this year was horrible!!!!!! I couldn't believe when I opened your blog that you felt the same. (I taped last Sundays episode so I haven't watched it) I can't believe Elizabeth got turned down???? I think you should try out for the show. I would watch you design anytime!!!! Thanks Sharon

Dear Debbie,
I just read you blog, as I do EVERY week and I find myself saying "YES, YES, YES!!!!! What has happened to "Design Star"? It's HORRIBLE!!!!! Why don't you submit a video of your work and your design philosophy? I can see it now, a show of our own!!! Debbie, I'm not kidding, you could design rings around everyone they have EVER had on that show!
Just a fan

Debbie Dusenberry said...

I think of submitting a tape once in awhile but then I know it is probably 3 weeks of back-breaking work, putting up with kids, stupid production schedules, no budget and typical network politics. And- I'm OLD! I would need a team to help me schlep all that stuff! I think I am better from the sidelines. I would, however, LOVE to be a judge! Can you imagine!??!!

Will Fisher said...

I agree with you 110% it is so frustrating because as I watch the show I am surprised at how much they missed. For example, in the firehouse challenge why not take really cool abstract photos of the firehouse (their number, equipment, etc.) enlarge it and hang it on the wall. As a design student watching this show I have literally screamed. Thanks for posting!!

Boxwood Cottage said...

What awful ideas the contestans of that show have ew that really hurts my eyes! You are a million times better designer Debbie and I can't believe that they dumbed Elizabeth (Maxson I think you might mean?) they should take a look at her gorgeously designed office. Oh well I think from what I saw and read here tonight I can be happy that I can't watch that show here in Germany lol
Best wishes sends you

i get so excited to watch every week. it's like a bad train wreck! i can't not watch.
so sad that one of these people will end up with their own show. HGTV must have no money to bring in good shows.
i am a lover of paint tarp curtains (on a porch and done right in a house) but come on my 8 year old son could have done better than that girl!
and i'm no designer, but even i wouldn't have painted that {no window} bathroom dark blue. what the hell was he thinking?! spa!! that spa would be out of business in a new york minute!
glad i'm not the only one screaming at the t.v. on sunday nights.

Deb,I shouted when I saw your post! You are right on target. I have always looked forward to Design Star, but between staged judging, staged drama, and hopeless props to deal with, I'm wondering if they really want good design? They do not want personal design, they are always in groups? I especially dislike the staged convesation at the end when they "pretend" to discuss who will go!!! I think the viewers feel insulted! I also want to tell Candice to run before some of this rubs off on her great talent!
Debbie show them how to design!!!!
Blessings,Becky

I have even written letters to HGTV begging them to do a REAL Designer show.....letting us see HOW a designer comes up with ideas, the ins and outs of the "secret" designer world, etc. This show is SO not real-world.

I haven't even watched this drivel this year. With such outstanding blogs out there, we don't NEED hgtv anymore........

Oh my gosh! I have been wishing I could just NOT watch it, but for some reason I am compelled to. It is absolutely awful! It seems like, with the format this year, they are not looking for someone good, they are settling for who is the least bad. And they're all bad! I don't see potential in any of the contestants. But of course, we barely see anything they do - since it is all team challenges. And since so much is geared towards the drama, so little of their "work" is shown. The worst part is, EVERY episode they pan through the rooms for like 5 seconds, and then Vern says "I think we've seen all we need to see here." Then when they are talking with the contestants at the end he always says, "I think we've heard all we need to hear." It just makes me want to punch him in the stomach. That is all. Thank you for letting me vent on this subject.
