I can soo relate to your analysis of why shops close their doors. And you're so right on the money. Until you've been there, done that, you cannot know how much work and energy it takes to keep it going. Pretty soon, all you have is great passion for what you do and that's what keeps you going. I visited your shop last summer and LOVED it! If you ever get out to Portland, Oregon, please come visit. Keep up the good work! I think it must have gotten rented out to every home magazine and book for about a year- because it kept turning up everywhere! lol

I'm sad all these stores are gone too- I kept alot of the same clippings you did- just because they made me feel so good (and they still do)

deb
relicsRelicshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16633722318810966422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28631804.post-66744054570656476032010-06-12T07:38:22.012-06:002010-06-12T07:38:22.012-06:00That was a bittersweet post. The 1990's was certainly the "golden age" of creative shopkeepers (present company excepted!).
Stores in my own town are now putting up the "closing" sign. I think your analysis of why shops are closing is spot on but I would have to add that if shoppers come in only to admire and "get ideas" it's hard to keep the magic going.
I look forward to your post on Carol Bolton. She is legend!Ritahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09147561317251727251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28631804.post-51331742552567612432010-06-11T22:16:07.869-06:002010-06-11T22:16:07.869-06:00Amen to that! The financial aspect being a big one. There is never enough money to do what you want to do or pay yourself and your staff for how hard you all work. One day someone just says, "I'm done."Curious Sofahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07495486041959660278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28631804.post-75654111859359969702010-06-11T16:31:39.830-06:002010-06-11T16:31:39.830-06:00I wonder why such great stores with fabulous press...I wonder why such great stores with fabulous press close - all but one is closed... sad but makes you wonder whyMarienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28631804.post-30244271760556488462010-06-11T12:56:53.107-06:002010-06-11T12:56:53.107-06:00Thank you for sharing the memories through picture...Thank you for sharing the memories through pictures and your writing (I absolutely echo Angie's sentiment). I will wait with baited breath to hear about Carol Bolton!
I walked into her Homestead Shop 20 years ago and have never seen any place yet that surprised and enchanted me the way her place did. Who would have ever thought of combining old and new like that?!
Some day I'll get to your store.... have a feeling yours would inspire the same way.
All the best to you... seems like things are picking up.Angie @ viva la cottagehttp://www.vivalacabin.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.com
