For those of you who think I shop at all the fabulous antique places and have a home filled with unusual rarities, I have a confession to make- I am currently addicted to the Big Lots discount store. If some of you do not have a Big Lots in your town, I am sorry for you. If on the other hand you do have one, run don't walk and challenge yourself to really dig for great, inexpensive but stylish items.
I have wandered into this store in the past but not until this summer did my addiction really begin. It started when I went there to buy plain white candles for a friends wedding. I found 6" pillars, two for $5, as well as bags and trays of votives for much less. My friend needed inexpensive but creative centerpieces for her reception so we opted for different sizes of glass hurricanes using lots of candlelight. So from Wal-Mart to Big Lots I was buying simple glass vessels for less than $8 a piece. Remember this shot? (Who says we don't recycle?)
After my third visit to Big Lots to stock up on more candles for our own Christmas season, I started to do what most women would do, I started to walk the store and investigate every isle. I was amazed at what I found and even more amazed at the price. Focusing on the good over the sea of bad is crucial and as with anything, shopping with a color palette in mind makes things easier to edit. Remember these things because at first glance you may want to turn around and run.
A $5 frame with my own antique illustration, mottled light and dark grey candles ($3), thick towels in my bathroom palette ($6.50) and the ticking fabric ($5.00) underneath may soon cover a small chair.I also scored some great hardware items which are my favorite thing to dig through.
My staff laughs every time I carry in a bag of supplies from Big Lots but they're catching on and always surprised at what I find. I also decided what a hoot it would be to design products for them. To heck with the Isaac for Target or Martha for K Mart, it's Deb at Big Lots!
It's all about the hunt and don't we all love a bargain. Remember- money can't buy taste!

Good for you! I have two of those at my access and I can't pass them up either. I can't wait until your designs hit their shelves ;)
(then MY shelves)
I love Big Lots. You got some great things!! Laurie
thanks for helping to open our eyes! You found some great things and lucky for me, we have a Big Lots nearby.

I have one mere minutes from my home. Now I must go! And you found fantastic things - kudos to you! And you're so right... money cannot buy taste. I keep reminding myself that. Thanks for sharing.
Deb, you make me want to move to KC, you really do! I thought that I was the only person on the planet who could go to Big Lots and find all of that great stuff. You're the sister that I have never met!
I've bought "display" items (namely fake potted palms for my flea market booth) at Big Lots. I cannot tell you how many times people want to buy them (which always seemed weird to me).
Also, your point about shopping with a palette in mind is OH SO TRUE. Everyone laughs at how quickly I shop (whether it's a flea market or Macy's), but when you know your palette, you're not distracted.
Thanks for 'fessing up!
Oh Yes! Deb definielty needs to design lines of fab antique-y looking goodies for Big Lots!
I've loved them forever, even when they were 'Pic n' Save' (which is just a very unfortunate name with a gross connotation, if you ask me....)
I love your dishes. The best thing about white is you can just keep adding fab bits & pieces of new, vintage, and antique pattern sin all white and it will always coordinate! (And husbands never seem to catch on that the collection is growing...ahem. ;0) )
Great finds. I love Big Lots!
I love Big Lots too and they opened a new one a few months ago closer to my house. And actually they keep it pretty nice and organized unlike other discount places i go thru..... great finds. mishelle
LOVE!!!! Big Lots!!!
Now the secrets out!
Thank you for all the great ideas!

Deb, I'm one of the unfortunate ones that does not have a Big Lots in my town, but if you start designing for them I will definately drive to the next town to buy. Someone told me awhile back of the great things they had, but just haven't stopped there yet. Now I'm going to have to check them out! Happy New Year!
I love Big Lots! I always get my wrapping papers there! So inexpensive, but cute!!
You are so right about Big Lots...it IS the thrill of the hunt. Sometimes we find nothing, sometimes a basket full. Thanks for sharing this and reminding us of the simple things. You are right, money cannot buy taste!
I love reading your blog, you are such an inspiration.
Jodie
ps...cannot wait to use my new 2009 Journal I bought from you at Silver Bella!!! Happy New Year!
I don't have a Big Lots nearby but something similar. Like you said the stuff with true possibilities stands out from the rest. It's true that money cannot buy taste. For me, the hunt is the thing. The joy is in finding the perfect item at a bargain.
RIght now I'm in the process of helping my son and his fiance plan the decor at their wedding. IKEA has fantastic glass vases and jars. Some are only $2. I simply lose my mind in IKEA. The possibiliities...the possibilities.
Deb,
Great to see there are still Big Lots around. I had shopped there for years for everything. Even to decorate my sister's office. A few years ago, they closed the two in my area. Now, it is too far to go to the few that are left in our state.
Thanks for sharing on a great secret that I've know about for a long time.
Wow. Nice assortment of stuff.
The Big Lots in Colorado Springs isn't so great. Been in there 5 or 6 times. Left empty handed every time save once -- bought a set of outdoor cushions for my wicker.
It really depends on your location, I think. A friend in Wisconsin says they get QVC closeouts. Super cool.
But you know the VERY best stuff can only be found at specialty and antique shops like Curious Sofa :)
My mother, aunt and I discovered Big Lots about three or four years ago. We first visited when we were seeking inexpensive Easter decorations, and we were amazed at what we found! I don't know what we expected (well, yea I do, junk), but what we got was fabulous! I've even found cute things that I bought at great prices that I've later seen in some of the quirky cute shops around our town square at triple the price!! Now, Big Lots is a regular stop on our shopping days, and we NEVER come out of there empty handed! What fun!
I used to hit Big Lots, well, alot. But at some point they changed and I stopped going. Hmmm, you've made me reconsider, and I just might have to pop in today. Another of my faves is Dollar Tree. As you say, much to overlook, but for a buck an item, who can resist such a treasure hunt. Thanks for the great post.

I am so glad to see you got a new hammer...I hope you keep your old bent one for the memories!
love it.
Really love your blog and all your fabulous ideas. I think I must pop into our local big lots for sure! Thanks for the tips.
I've always been a Ross/TJMaxx girl, but have never tried Big Lots...I'm gonna go right now!
Thanx for the beautiful pictures & inspiration in 2008, and Happy New Year!
So I have to say, getting all these comments in less than 14 hours from posting about Big Lots is cracking me up. We all love a deal, don't we? And yes, I also love the Dollar Tree, Deal$, TJMaxx, Marshalls and the list goes on... But then I love my store too. For me it's gotta be really cheap or really unusual. That's shopping! Happy New Year everyone!
I have been a HUGE Big Lots fan for years for that very same reason. There are diamonds in the midst of all that ROUGH!
Debbie,
I have loved Big Lots for years! I was so bummed to hear (just a few weeks ago) that our Big Lots on 95th and Nall is closing. I ran over there as fast as I could, I did manage to get a few great things for 50% off. But so sad that, one so close to us, has closed. Rats! Maybe I'll bump into you at the one on Wornall sometime. Happy New Year! Kathi
Amazing how you can take some little treasure away from the other junk and make it royal.
I love Big Lots and IF you have an Aldi's in your area you can save BIG on groceries
Kudos to you for a fantastic blog.
Loved this entry on Big Lots and I will now plan to go there. The faux bois (fake wood) fabric was an absolute find.
Keep up the good work -- you are highly entertaining AND informative.
A new fan, Cindy
I must confess...My name is Nancy and I'm a Big Lots junkie. I spotted some items in your photos that I purchased last month! Loved that blue and silver wrapping paper ..wish I had bought it all! And the white pillars, and the ribbon. Great stuff. It was funny to see Martha's goods there on the racks. You can really find great things but once the word gets out, it seems to disappear quickly. We have a Big Lots , TJ Max and Tuesday Morning which can be pretty dangerous for me!
Hi Debi,
A friend got me started on Big Lots. I got two great out door arbors for my patio at a great price. I watch sometimes until they are closing things out and get them even cheaper. I agree that you have to overlook some
the junk but there are some great things to be had. Happy New Year!
I like your new picture with your puppy.
Sandyt
I have never been in our Big Lots...guess I'm going to have to check it out!
Thanks for sharing your addiction. :)
I've blogged about Big Lots too! I like to go in there in the spring, they have some nice wire plant baskets and I'm always amazed how inexpensive they are! I hope they hire you to design for them...I would go in there a lot more often! LOL
I have been a Big Lots stalker for years! I love it! It's funny I bought those same paper die cuts not too long ago. We have several here in AZ and when I'm back there in KC, I visit all the ones I have found there. Debbie, you can always email me if you need more of something that BLOTS may be out of there that you need more of. I can scour the AZ stores for you. I've turned many finds from Blots into art projects. It's so much fun to see what comes from purchases there.
Hugs, Tricia in AZ

Big Lots has been a staple for me since my kids were small. It was a great place to go for party treats etc, then I got hooked on the holiday stuff and now I go there for a cheap shopping fix along with the thrift stores. Glad you have gotten the bug as well. I might have to make a trip this afternoon, I haven't been there lately and I need my fix. Thanks for reminding me, Pam
What a great blog! And your posts are fun fun fun and very informative as well. Found you thru Southern Girl here in Georgia. I do like Big Lots for the very reasons you do.
Happy New Year back at'cha.
Take care --

I absolutely love Big Lots!! I hope you are hitting up thier after Christmas clearance. I can't get over how much they have everything marked down.
Great finds!! I like Big Lots, too! I haven't been for a while and seeing all your great finds makes me want to get on over there quick! :)

I know I will never make it to your shop so I would love to see more and hear more about CURIOUS SOFA. I loved seeing your beautiful home in COUNTRY LIVING (Jan 2008) but you said you sold everything and would start decorating again...I can't imagine what you will do but I do know it will be BEAUTIFUL!!!
I LOVE BIG LOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love Big Lots - but have not been in while. Put on list - go to Big Lots.
Glenda
I just love Big Lots...my friends always tease me about shopping there. The best thing I ever got there was a large quantity of giant, beautiful, globby freshwater pearls. I have made some gorgeous jewelry out of them. By the way...told the manager at my Big Lots about all the cool women who will now be shopping Big Lots because of their huge spread on Curious Sofa...he was humbled & said he would check out your blog!
Big Lots is great I just bought several small Christmas tins for next to nothing. Their lawn and garden dept. is also a lot of fun.
Beautiful pictures! I have a friend that shops at your store often and she always has wonderful things to say! Thanks for sharing. :)
