Hurry Spring

.

.
We've been very lucky here in Kansas City to have minimal snow and an easy winter but despite all that, warmer weather is still something we hope for in March. Tomorrow we are expecting 72 degrees and just three days ago there were five inches of snow on the ground. Ahh the Midwest. Love it or leave it. We are jumping the gun for Spring here at the Sofa because we can't wait any longer.

Our Spring beginnings.

New slipcovered loveseat.

New slipcovered slipper chair.

New slipcovered chaise.

The Custom Furniture Sale ends Sunday so please run in to order any furniture or fabric by the yard and save 20%. We even had brand new pieces delivered this week and to stay true to the sale they are also 20% off. We have also been marking down many items throughout the store to prepare for new Spring goods. Actually, Debbie is in one of her makeover moods and I have decided my new motto is 'No More Compromise'. It's time to sell exactly what I envisioned my store to be: 99% of what I would want in my own home. What a concept! Speaking of, take a look at the March issue of KC SPACES magazine and the 10 page spread on my home. We have 45 copies for sale in the store if you cannot find it on our local newsstand.

March SPACES with a spread of my home.

Back to my revelation: to be honest, the economy has most retailers rethinking every move they make and instead of bringing my customers quick sell, cheaply made, see-anywhere goods, I am going to do just the opposite. We're making it more fabulous than ever! Gone will be the generic filler and something for everyone mentality. Now don't expect this to happen overnight (unless of course you come in and buy it all this week, which would be just fine with me!) but by Fall you will see a different, funkier more specific look. Not to worry- we are staying true to who we are- in fact, even more so.

Egg wreath, lamb box, faux chocolate bunny, birdhouse.

Ivory glitter bunnies and white chocolate eggs.

What does this mean? WE NEED YOU. Fans of the Sofa UNITE! It's hard as the owner not to want to buy merchandise that will keep the store looking full, honor the season and have an assortment of things that will please 95% of the visitors. So the true-blue, die-hard Curious Crowd need to support this because, well, we will lose some of those customers that want to know where all the wreaths are! You cannot imagine the requests we get being in the Village. Someday I may tell you. So the young at heart, home decorator, do-it-yourselfer, "I don't need a decorator", artist, professional, junker devotee need to cheer us on (and I know you're there!)

A lot of wonderful artwork has just arrived and new lamps.

For now I am still happy and proud with what has been coming in and ready for some serious antiquing too. Take a look around.

My new favorite: lamps and pillows with applied fabric.

African glass bead necklaces in ocean colors.

A real-live cuckoo clock, the newest pet in the store!

Vintage rings.

Glass paperweights.

New French books.

Hope to see you!

Congrats on your anniversary and even more so on being in the magazine! How exciting! Your store looks awesome and I can't wait to visit you. I understand what you are saying regarding the economy and being able to survive. I think there are so many of those cookie cutter stores that you need to be unique. But I think you already are most definitely!!! But you need to have that nitch that makes you truly unique. Here's to many more successful years!! Keep up the wonderful job you do!

Woohoo to you!! Congratulations on your annivesary and you got your magazine article!!!
On the other side of the world here we are awaiting Autumn and strangley we do the same colours that you do in Sprring, so I have started clling it upside down Spring. I know what you mean about having a little change but sticking to the sort of things that make your heart beat a little faster. We are moving away from our pretty pretty look to something a bit bolder and edgier...something I feel way more comfortable with, so I can not wait to see what you have in store for your 'new look'. It is bound to be wonderful and inspirational!

Congratulations on your Anniversary!

The magazine spread looks beautiful, and the call out on the front is fantastic! Anxious to watch your store makeover - Spring is a great time to do something like that isn't it?

I'm not at all sure what I am most excited about. The new stuff coming in. The layout in the magazine. Or the fact that you are planning a new YOU look for the fall. Truly, I think I am most thrilled about the latter. When one embraces oneself, and one is already loved, how can it be a bad thing? Congrats! I'm excited to see the future with you. ~Mindy

How Exciting about both of your pieces of news! Oh and I'm really excited about the opening of your new web site! Yipee!!!This is soooo cool for those of us that are a loooong way away :)

I really admire you for listening and following your heart!! We did some what of that when we moved here. We bought a 5'/8' trailer what fit in came! It has been so fun refurnishing our new lives here with things we truly love. The dining table that is an OLD plank door with the most amazing layers of pealing paint and hundreds of character marks :)

Deb I wish you all kinds of success and can't wait to see what emerges from your soul!!

I HAVE FOLLOWED YOUR BLOG FOR A LONG TIME AND HAVE ALWAYS LOVED WHAT YOU DO. I HAVE A LITTLE SHOP IN THE MIDWEST THAT IS ELECTIC, ONE OF A KIND FINDS AND DESIGNS MAINLY. I JUST BUY WHAT I LOVE, BUT NEVER AT A GIFT SHOW, I DON'T BUY LINES, JUST ITEMS TO UPCYCLE. IN OTHER WORDS, JUNK! BUT JUNK I CAN DO SOMETHING WITH. CONGRATS ON YOUR MAG ARTICLE! YOU DESERVE IT! IF I LIVED NEAR BY, I WOULD BE IN YOUR SHOP ALOT, SUPPORTING YOUR IDEAS. ALSO HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Good for you! I must say, when I am in a store and I KNOW that the quantities are limited, I am more apt to buy. Sometimes because I know it won't be there when I come back, but also because I love being and having the unique and one of a kind. Now, if only I lived closer, because that love seat and those vintage rings! Good luck!

I would love to see home accessories in your online store. I am a lover of old and tarnished items that are beautiful as they are or can be updated. Great store...wish I lived nearer.

Good luck on following your heart.

Congratulations on the anniversary and on the magazine spread, Debbie. Cheers to you for calling out YOUR customers by name--they know who they are. The thoughts of all shopkeepers who want their stores to reflect something authentic are with you!

The vintage rings and the the chippy white paint really caught my eye...GOOD FOR YOU for staying true to what you want your store o be...EMBRACE IT, I say...Ithink you're right to be unqiue- cause mass merchandisers can beat independents at "shop fillers" on price anyday...Keep your niche and hopefully, as I saw on Fern Hill's blog, need to rememberto "shop local stores that matter to you...."

Hoping to head your way soon!

Congratulations! I am thrilled and can't wait to see more - I am definately planning a trip to visit and shop this summer. By the way, thank you for your great advice on how I can create your beautiful look in my own home. I am working on it and lately I just seem to find exactly what I am looking for. A thought - I would like to paint my dining room a romantic light shade of gray. Do you know of a shade/color? I'm having a tough time finding the right color without it looking like a jail cell or too blue. Loved all the pictures and can't wait to see more of your home and shop with all the updates.

I painted my ceiling and guest bedroom Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray. Maybe a bit dark for you but you can go with a lighter shade on the color swatch.

Congratulations on a fabulous article in the magazine! Even the pix here make it look spectacular. And your shop looks amazing, too. LOVE the slipcovered and upholstered pieces!

May this spring bring lots of new business your way.

Hold onto your courage with both hands, my grandma used to say!

Your new plan is right up my alley! I love that you are thinking more individually rather than cookie cutter for the goods you will offering. I like one of a kind unique and I think you may have a hit on your hands!
